. . . A trial of the efficacy of short-term copper-protoporphyrin therapy in the therapy of mild congenital erythropoietic porphyria. The results of copper-protoporphyrin (CP) therapy in mild congenital erythropoietic porphyria (CEP) are evaluated in the case of a 32-year-old female with a mild, slowly progressing and chronic haemolytic anaemia. The therapy lasted 26 weeks and was supplemented by regular phlebotomies. It was followed by a gradual increase in haemoglobin to 14.8 g/dl, an increase in haematocrit to 35.5%, and a decrease in reticulocytes and haemosiderin to normal values. In vitro, however, a CEP enzyme defect remained. It is concluded that CEP is probably an enzyme defect and that an initial defect can be corrected by short-term therapy with CP./* * Licensed to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) under one * or more contributor license agreements.
